Tías and Surroundings

Your corner of Lanzarote, between vineyards, volcanoes and the sea

A café cortado on the plaza in the morning, fresh fish at the old harbour for lunch, a glass of Malvasía among black vineyards in the evening. Everything that makes Lanzarote special lies just a few minutes from Tías.

Tías is not a resort but a lively Canarian town. Around the white church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria you will find bakeries, small shops and restaurants where locals gather in the evening. The Nobel Prize-winning writer José Saramago lived and wrote here from 1993 until his death in 2010. His home, A Casa José Saramago, is now a museum with his library and study.

Old Town and Harbour of Puerto del Carmen

Away from the seafront lies the old fishing harbour. Blue and white staircases, wooden doors with painted frames and little cactus gardens are reminders that Puerto del Carmen was once a fishing village. In the harbour restaurants, the fish could hardly be fresher.

The Seafront Promenade

Puerto del Carmen's promenade runs for several kilometres along the sea, past palm trees, cafés and pale sandy beaches. In the morning you will have it almost to yourself for a run. In the evening everyone strolls towards the sun as it sets in gold behind the mountains to the south.

Coastal Path and Lava Gardens

Between the promenade and the sea, Canary spurge, column cacti and agaves grow out of black lava rock. Waves crash against the cliffs, and on clear days you can see all the way across to Fuerteventura.

The La Geria Wine Region

Just above Tías begins one of the most unusual wine regions in the world. Each vine grows in its own hollow in the black volcanic ash, sheltered by a semicircular wall of lava stones. The result is Malvasía volcánica, a dry, mineral white wine. Many bodegas along the road invite you in for a tasting, and Bodega El Grifo, one of the oldest wineries in the Canary Islands, has a small museum showing how wine has been made here for centuries.

Our tip
Drive the road through La Geria in the late afternoon, when the low sun makes the lava walls glow.
